There are nearly 6,000 women serving as UN Peacekeepers in uniformed military, emergency and police field-missions. They are based in powder keg situations in Lebanon, Darfur, South Sudan, Haiti, Kosovo and more.
Female personnel on the ground are critical to the work carried out by UN missions. They are often granted first-contact in post-conflict theatres to protect women and children. They also provide role models of women’s empowerment in war-torn communities.
