ournalists who document stories dominating the worldâs news will present their work at this yearâs Schuneman Symposium on Photojournalism and New Media on March 30-31.
This yearâs symposium will be virtual and feature stories about Americaâs 20-year war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the âwar on drugsâ in the Philippines, last summerâs protests in front of the White House and COVID-19.
âThe focus of the 2021 Schuneman Symposium is covering global crises,â said Eddith Dashiell, director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. âWe have a diverse group of photojournalists and reporters who will share their stories of how they reported and documented crises from countries such as Iraq, Manila, France and Afghanistan. We believe our virtual symposium will provide an opportunity for a global conversation about covering global crises.â

âAfter a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Schuneman Symposium on Photojournalism and New Media is back and we canât be happier,â said Timothy Goheen, director of the School of Visual Communication. âI hope that everyone who can will take advantage and register for this free event. Speaking of that, a special thanks to both Smitty and Pat Schuneman for again making this amazing event possible.â
The symposium also includes screenings of two films. âThe Nightcrawlersâ is about Filipino President Rodrigo Duterteâs âwar on drugsâ that is estimated to have taken 20,000 lives. âEssential Journalistsâ is about how journalists adapted to cover COVID-19.
This 12th symposium is made possible through a generous gift from Ohio University alumni R. Smith and Patricia Schuneman. It is presented by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the School of Visual Communication.
All programs will be presented via Zoom. Pre-registration is free, available and encouraged. Register and learn more about the speakers.
